There’s one thing you should know when you’re a freelancer or a business owner. It’s not about your products, services, cost, or branding. Instead, it’s the umbrella term that covers all these.
The most important thing you should know above anything else is marketing. It’s that simple.
In fact, it’s common sense. But not a practice or skill that’s common among freelancers and business owners.
📌 Marketing VS Selling: What’s the Difference?
Selling refers to the end of a transaction made by the market to the customer once the former receives the payment for an item. On the other hand, marketing is how you sell the item to your customers or clients.
That’s why you must know how to do it. It is present in all stages of business, from convincing, and negotiating to selling. You cannot perform these without knowing how to market.
📌 What if I don’t know how to market? Should I be worried?
First of all, don’t worry. You know how to market. You may be doing it even without your knowledge. How so? What did you do when you were a child and asked your parent or guardian to buy something for you?
You came up with reasons to convince them why you need a certain item. You may have negotiated and promised to perfect your test if they buy you what you need. As a result, they are sold for why you need the item.
📌 So why marketing?
As mentioned, marketing is the common ground among freelancers and business owners. Both require the skill of knowing how to sell. By definition, it is promoting and selling products or services that include market research and advertising.
Yet the danger lies in looking like everyone else.
Marketing coach Terry Deans warns that you become a commodity when you look like everyone else. It doesn’t help that people have preconceived notions about business in general.
📌 How can they know you’re not only after their money or boosting your sales?
They should see you as competent, confident, likeable, excellent, and trustworthy. When you know how to position yourself, your clients or customers will likely buy from you. You need to convince them you have the solution to their problem.
